Just a follow up comment : My client Bear Jack Gebhardt, author of PRACTICING THE PRESENCE OF PEACE and HOW TO HELP YOUR SMOKER QUIT, added his books to the Select Program and today and tomorrow (1/22 and 1/23) he's using 2 of his 5 promo days. I'm so happy for him because in just a matter of hours he had over 600 downloads. Both books, now best sellers, had previously been inactive since he was mostly selling paperback copies at the workshop he teaches. Yet, now, he has 600 (and growing) new readers and many hours to go before the 2 free days of promos end. I'm certain his sales will continue after the promo days end, too. Bear is a great example of how this Program can give life to a book that was in hibernation.

p.s. I just received an e-mail from a client who is going to join the KDP Select Program and is running his book for free this weekend based on reading this article/interview I did.
His book, PRACTICING THE PRESENCE OF PEACE, is fabulous and will do great under the Select Program. It will be free this weekend (1/22 and 1/23) http://www.amazon.com/Practicing-Presence-Peace-ebook/dp/B00243G2G2/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1327042039&sr=1-1

DW:

Thanks for the most excellent look behind the curtain on HH"s experience with the Kindle Lending Library.

Like HH, I dove in, too. Only while she swam, I more or less did the dog paddle.

120 of my KIndle books were borrowed. And while I do have a healthy skepticism for anything Amazon says about Amazon, whether it's the result of diving into KOLL or just coincidence, sales of all my Kindle books have risen substantially. (I ain't no HH or Stephen King, so we're talking hundreds of books in a MONTH--not hundreds or thousands of books in a DAY.)

Very good! You are pointing out a big problem nobody else is talking about.

We can hope e-books will get better, but it might not happen unless more people point it out.

There's an old saying by Piet Hein, which is about why it may not happen. It's something like "The writer who can't write are read by readers who can't read."

Let's encourage our literate friends to write reviews encouraging the "best" and maybe the authors and Amazon will get the hint!

Comment on KDP Select for Self-Published Authors: Does the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library Make Sense? by 1 star reviewer

This is no good. Only the most desperate of writers (and sadly, they are LEGION) will take this up. Why does Amazon offer some odd POT of money to be allegedly distributed? Why not just PAY the authors in a straightforward fashion? Instead of plotting to offer their work for free what self published authors ought to work on is improving content so people will actually PAY for their work. THAT is how you gain readers. Instead they are hitting rock bottom with giving their books away for free to get people to read them, and once this FREE level is saturated, these so-called writers will have nowhere left to go. They already ran from 99 cents because so many of them were doing it that it no longer has any effect.

I've recently read that over 50,000 self published writers have signed up for the program. I've never seen a lot that was sadder than writers. This is really eye-opening. I thought 99 cents was pathetic but FREE? I will gladly bypass thei free ebooks to pay $10 or more for books that are worth my attention. Those KDP Select books ought to be free because they are not worth 99 cents or even 1 penny, and I'm glad those writers will not earn any money. I hope their books stay free and garner 1 star reviews from the hard-to-please Walmart crowd these authors are begging to read their garbage ebooks. I hope those 1 star reviews sting. Those authors deserve it.

Self published kdp select authors: put your free crap up for free. I will download it and trash it online for you. I will leave scathing 1 star reviews! Ha! Can't wait to read your next, free work so I can trash that, too.
