This is a very big deal for publishers of children's eBooks. In late April I wrote about how Apple is adding interest age ranges. Before writing that piece I contacted Kindle support and they told me you had to use one of your two categories for this. That was a non-starter for most publishers.
Here is what it says on KDP now:
“Age and Grade Ranges (optional)
Age and Grade are optional fields you can choose to make it easier for readers to find your books. The Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk Children's Kindle Stores and the Amazon.com Schools and Teaching Store filter books by age and grade range, respectively, so adding this information makes your book easier for those stores to sort.”
How it is implemented
When you visit your book listing on KDP you’ll now see two new fields under the heading 3. Target Your Book to Customers. Both of these are optional so you can use 1 or both. There is a drop down menu for each:
- Age Range: 19 minimum and maximum fields, “Baby” through “18+”
- U.S. Grade Range: 14 minimum and maximum fields, “Preschool” through “12th grade”
