A version of our golf course directory is available now in Kindle format and it includes a guide to tee time discount programs. Now anyone with a PC, Mac, iPhone or Kindle can carry around a list of golf courses for easy access.
Here are a few less documented notes about the process. I’ll be publishing a more detailed guide in the coming weeks.
- Get all your data into Word and remove special formatting. We combined information from our Salesforce.com CRM system, Excel and Word and made sure the formatting was consistent. This is critical to creating a file that looks good as an ebook.
- Remember this is essentially an HTML file. Once you convert the file from Word, and make changes, there is no going back. So save versions along the way and avoid doing content edits in the HTML file.
- When you save your document in HTML, save as “Web Page, Filtered” rather than save as “Web Page”. The latter creates a file that retains special formatting instructions that Word can use if you want to keep editing the file. The problem is this interferes with Amazon’s conversion program.
- Before you begin, spend time looking at how similar titles are priced. In the end, we decided to keep our price low ($2.99) to encourage sales. Your competition ranges from thousands of free books to NYT best sellers costing $9.99 (and up). Ignore your present price in your research. After all, piracy is less of an issue in this format.
